Common Starfish

Drop Offs

The common starfish is a survival specialist on our shores. When attacked on one of its five arms it just severs the injured member and makes its escape. The lost arm will grow back.
In search of food, these echinoderms destroy entire mussel beds. The starfish, up to 30 centimetres in size, covers the shell's breathing hole until the creature is deprived of air. With strong arms tearing apart its prey it then pulls out the stomach to devour the meat. Starfish are successful predators – and they’re pretty smart too, despite having neither a heart nor a brain.
