Club Hydroid

Rocky Reefs

The club hydroids are cnidarians meaning they can sting. Their colonies sometimes form a dense carpet across large algae, stones and between seagrass. With their fine tentacles they filter organic material out of the water. Like all cnidarians, these hydrozoa are made of very special cells – so-called nettle capsules or cnidae. These are not only used to catch their prey, but also for defence.
