Moon Jellyfish

Seagrass Beds

The moon jellyfish features striking, cloverleaf-like gonads on an umbrella reaching as much as 40 centimetres in size. These gonads tell us the animal’s sex– reddish violet for the females and white to reddish orange for the males.
The moon jellyfish is made up of 98 per cent water and has neither a heart nor a brain. As very large plankton it is one of the non-swimmers in our oceans, with the currents and waves alone determining their route.
