The harbour porpoise is the only whale that reproduces in the Baltic Sea. Like all toothed whales, it has a “sixth sense” and uses a special biosonar to form an acoustic picture of its environment – much like bats. This ability enables these shy creatures to hunt for herring and goby, or to communicate with each other, even at night and in murky water. But this biosonar doesn’t always help them avoid the fishing nets, that can prove so deadly for them. The increasing noise in the sea also makes it hard for the harbour porpoise to survive. Less than 500 of them now live in the central Baltic Sea.
